MSU Optometry Vision Science Exhibition & Seminar (MOVES) 2017
Biennial Event of Management and Science University (MSU) Expands Students’ Learning Opportunities, Builds Graduate Employability
Management & Science University (MSU) welcomed industry partners, practitioners, academicians, and students to the MSU Optometry & Vision Science Exhibition and Seminar 2017 (MOVES 2.0) recently. The biennial event organized by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) Department of Optometry and Visual Science (DOVS) with MSU Eye Centre (MEC) was launched by MSU President, Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.
Besides providing a health service to members of community, MOVES activities are designed to align all facets of student development with the University’s target of producing well-rounded graduates. MOVES 2.0 signed on the support of industry partners to expand the existing breadth of its learning platforms and build soft skills alongside academic competencies.
Professor Shukri described the strong support of industry partners as reflective of its commitment to national higher education. Its importance is at par for both faculty and country. Industry partners attending MOVES 2.0 were Maxvue Vision Sdn Bhd, Malaysian Hoya Lens Sdn Bhd, Institut Integrasi Utama Avicenna, Topcon Instruments (M) Sdn Bhd, and Nur Perdana Optometry.
The 2017 edition of the medical and healthcare programme presented a line-up of activities distinctive in their abbreviations and acronyms: CUREs (Care for Your Eyes), WiD (Walk in The Dark), MyBEST (MSU Young Ambassador for Better Eyesight for Tomorrow), SeeDs (Search for Entrepreneur & Development Skills), AIN (Alumni Interaction & Networking), E2E (Explore to Exhibit), GroW-I (Growing Wellrounded Individuals), and MOSSEM (MSU Optometry Student Seminar).
Quick to quip on the distinctiveness of the nomenclature, Professor Shukri lightheartedly described it as a clear telling of the Faculty’s sharp vision. With seminar titles that included Care and Management of Dry Eyes and Types of Artificial Tears, Allergic Eye and Use of Anti Histamine, Understanding of Retinal Abnormality in Diabetics Made Easy, and Primary Eye Care and Diabetic Retinopathy, MOVES 2.0 indeed brought into focus the salient issues in community eyecare.
Professor Shukri reiterated to MSUrians that in the 21st-century workplace, even a 4.0 CGPA needs equally excellent soft skills to bring its value up to speed. As industry is where they are headed, he encouraged thorough learning of its ways. In quoting the words of that most famous alumni of the sight impaired, the educator and humanitarian Helen Keller, the MSU President encouraged going beyond the call of the ordinary. What differentiates extraordinary from ordinary is after all, simply that little extra.
