Halal Pharmacy among Focus at Joint Global Health Pharmacy Course by Management and Science University (MSU)

The modern role of pharmacists in the context of global health is more patient-oriented than product-centered. Management and Science University (MSU) co-organizes a course on Global Health Pharmacy with the aim to redefine the role of the pharmacist.

Organized in collaboration with the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC), and in partnership with the Philippine Pharmacists Association Davao Chapter, it was held at the UIC Bajada Campus in the Philippines.

In redefining the role of pharmacists in global health, attention was drawn to the contexts of local community and United Nations millennium sustainable development goals.

A special focus on halal pharmacy aimed to introduce it to a wider global audience, with Management and Science University (MSU) contributing to discussions on the global trend and issues in halal pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals.

The concept of global health pharmacy to community underscores the pharmacist’s bigger role to the community. With its training aiming to prepare pharmacists for globalization as well as for ASEAN integration, the course introduced the concept of pharmacist-to-the-people.

Another focus on extended pharmacy service aimed to correct the misconception that pharmacists are mere pushers of medical products, when a pharmacist is in fact a healthcare professional with a bigger role to play in population health.

The three-day event of the 2nd international certificate course was delivered through a series of lectures and facilitated by senior academic staff members of the Management and Science University (MSU) School of Pharmacy (SPH) and International Centre for Halal Studies (ICHLAS).

The Management and Science University (MSU) School of Pharmacy (SPH) also runs the Asia Pacific Education Workshop (APPEW) series with partner universities including the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC). It is part and parcel of a continuous effort by Management and Science University (MSU) to modernize teaching and learning as well as the pharmacy curriculum.
